  • One of a number of beacons, or clearly visible summits from which fires were lit, within Dartmoor National Park
  • The beacons were lit to warn the local population of danger*
  • To visit Hameldown Beacon, start from one of the car parks in the moorland village of Widecombe in the Moor and then follow the road west out of the village. The road climbs steeply and joins a track. This meets the Two Moors Way which takes you to Hameldown Beacon. Alternatively, you can approach from the Grimspound area to the north. There's limited parking by the road here. We've located Hameldown Beacon on Google maps. Also refer to the Ordnance Survey OL28 'Dartmoor' map for detail
  • There are big panoramic views. To the east, you'll see Haytor Rocks and Hound Tor (East Dartmoor). To the south are the high moors around Ryder's Hill. To the west are the tors of the Heart of Dartmoor and North Dartmoor. It's impressive stuff
  • Others include Cosdon Beacon and Hill and Ugborough Beacon and Eastern Beacon
