Great Gnats Head, Devon

  • Located in Sheepstor, Devon, South West England, England
  • Great Gnats Head is located on the high south plateau of Dartmoor National Park. Close to the source of the River Plym, there's a cairn at its summit. As you can see from the images in the 'Photo Gallery', the views east and south across the plateau are unspectacular. In our opinion, the views west and south west into Cornwall are more impressive
  • Great Gnats Head is on the north east boundary of English Heritage's Upper Plym Valley. Across the River Plym is the famous prehistoric complex at Drizzle Combe
  • To visit, follow what is referred to as the Abbot's Way across Plym Ford. A wide grass track sweeps up the side of the moor on its way to Erme Pits and Erme Head and Fords. Great Gnats Head is east of that track as you climb the side of the moor. We've positioned Great Gnats Head on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location. Also consult the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map of the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map for detail
