Golden Cap, Dorset

  • Located in Seatown, Dorset, South West England, England
  • The highest cliff on the south coast of England, Golden Cap is part of an area of land managed by the National Trust
  • At 626ft or 191m above sea level, it offers exceptional views of the Dorset and Devon coastlines
  • On the South West Coast Path, the cliff is also part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site
  • We'd recommend following the coastal path east to Seatown Beach and West Bay Beach and (East) Cliffs. Alternatively, walk west to Charmouth Beach and Lyme Regis
  • There's parking just north east of Golden Cap and good paths leading to its summit. The following walk was contributed by a local expert:
  • 'The highest point on the south coast at 191 metres. Access from a small road on the right just after Morcombelake on the A35 towards Chideock. Turn almost immediately left (signposted) on a rough road that leads up through Langdon Wood to a National Trust car park (pay and display or free to National Trust members). Go to the gate to the left of the information boards and follow the forest track with occasional views of Chideock and the sea. When you get to a junction, turn left then follow the footpath right through a field and up to the steep path onto the Cap itself. Look east from the trig point to Chideock, Bridport and the coast round to the Isle of Portland. Also, as you move west along the Cap, you can make out West Bay to the east and Charmouth, Lyme Regis and the Devon coast to the west. You can also walk up to Golden Cap from Chideock but is it a stiff climb or you can walk down to the sea at Seatown and refresh yourself at the pub. In April and May there are also bluebells in Langdon Wood. Estimated time for the walk from the National Trust car park is 45 minutes. Add time to enjoy those views.'
