Exmouth Orcombe Point Geoneedle, Devon

  • Located in Exmouth, Devon, South West England, England
  • The Orcombe Point Geoneedle marks the beginning of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The Geoneedle is located on the cliffs of Exmouth Orcombe Point and Rocks. We've positioned the Orcombe Point Geoneedle on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location
  • The South West Coast Path climbs from Exmouth on its way to Budleigh Salterton. Follow this exceptional stretch of coastline to visit the Geoneedle. There's plenty of parking behind Exmouth Orcombe Point Beach which is close to the Geoneedle
  • As you approach the Geoneedle from the direction of Exmouth, you'll see a number of stones embedded in the ground. These are an invitation to play 'Jurassic Coast Hopscotch'. As you jump from one stone to another, you see information carved into the different coloured materials. With each jump, you are moving through millions of years of geological time. You'll hop across Red Sandstone (Triassic), White Lias [Limestone] (Triassic), Blue Lias [Limestone and Clay] (Jurassic), Hamstone [Limestone] (Jurassic), Forest Marble (Jurassic), Portland Stone [Limestone] (Jurassic), Purbect Marble [Limestone] (Cretaceous) and Beer Stone [Limestone] (Cretaceous). Note that these stones run up the side of the Geoneedle as well
  • The Orcombe Point Geoneedle is the work of artist Michael Fairfaix. We provide a link to his website
