Erme Pits, Devon

  • Located in Sheepstor, Devon, South West England, England
  • Erme Pits are the remains of medieval and post-medieval tinworkings in the area surrounding Erme Head and Fords. Over the years, we've spent days walking in both this area and on the surrounding domed hills of Dartmoor's south plateau without seeing another person. It's easy to forget just how busy this area would have been in preceding centuries. Also note that the remains of the Red Lake China Clay Works are a short walk east. In addition, if you zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting on the accompanying Google map, you'll see what appear to be hundreds of scars on the landscape. This is evidence of the peat cutting industry. It's particularly noticeable on the satellite imagery around Green Hill
  • Erme Pits is in a remarkably beautiful area. It's a joy to explore the landscape and its history on a sunny day. The River Erme and Estuary rises here and flows south east towards Stall Moor Stone Row (North Section) and then south into Erme Plains
  • To visit Erme Pits, we'd recommend following what is marked as the Abbot's Way on the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. We've walked in from the car parks near Siward's or Nun's Cross and Nun's Cross Farm and the parking area by Gutter Tor. You can also head in from Shipley Bridge. If you don't fancy the Abbot's Way then try the route in from the Dendles Wood National Nature Reserve area starting at New Waste
