  • The Upper Plym Valley is a collection of prehistoric and medieval sites within the southern section of Dartmoor National Park. Managed by English Heritage, 'some 300 Bronze Age and medieval sites [cover] 15.5 square kilometres (6 square miles) of Dartmoor landscape'. Drizzle Combe is an area next to the Upper Plym Valley that's known for its concentration of stone rows, standing stones and barrows. It's one of the most famous prehistoric sites in Dartmoor National Park. If prehistory is of interest then Drizzle Combe is essential visiting
  • Both the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map and the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' map refer to the area as Drizzle Combe. However, you'll also see references to Drizzlecombe and The Drizzlecombe Complex. The Harvey map also marks a section of the area as Thrushel Combe
  • According to the excellent 'Legendary Dartmoor' site, the name Drizzle Combe is 'said to derive from the old moorland name of Drishel - a thrush and cum - a valley [sic] which meant 'valley of the thrush'. (Source: the 'Legendary Dartmoor' website to which we provide an external link)
  • There are three stone rows, three standing stones and numerous hut circles within pounds. There's also the aptly named Giant's Basin which is ancient barrow, or large cairn, that's been hollowed out to form a giant bowl or basin
