- Easily accessible from the car parks at County Gate on the A39 (between Porlock and Lynmouth) and Malmsmead
- We'd also thoroughly recommend walking in from the cluster of car parks on the B3223 to the west of Doone Valley. There are excellent paths to follow with exquisite, long views. If you choose this route, prepare yourself for a reasonably long walk. Study the Ordnance Survey OL9 'Exmoor' map for details
- From the information board at County Gate: 'From the hamlet of Malmsmead, a path leads up Badgworthy Water - famous as the heart of Doone Country. Here there are traces of a medieval village of houses, barns and fields, that was abandoned six hundred years ago.' And: 'In the 19th century the writer RD Blackmore explored the lost medieval landscape'
- The medieval village is set beneath steep hillsides cut by Badgworthy Water. You'll have to use your imagination as the village itself is now a series of mounds and earth covered foundations. The location, however, is a joy as is the walk along Badgworthy Water to Badgworthy Wood and beyond
- Cloud Farm, to the north of the medieval village, is a very popular Exmoor National Park campsite
- If literary landscapes are your thing, head east to explore Coleridge's Cottage and its surrounding area
- The National Trust's Watersmeet, Lynmouth, the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, The Valley of Rocks and Porlock Weir are all nearby. We'd also suggest you walk a section of the South West Coast Path
- The huge Atlantic-facing beaches of the North Devon AONB are to the west
