  • During the 18th and 19th centuries, Cornwall and West Devon were the most important copper and tin mining areas in the world. This is reflected in their designation as the UNESCO Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. For decades, the most important and productive areas were down in Cornwall around Redruth and Gwennap. Then, from the 1840s, a number of mines in what is now the Tamar Valley AONB became the richest copper producers in Europe. These mines were joined together, or consolidated, as Devon Great Consols. A mineral tramway, or railway, was built to transport the metal ore down to Morwellham Quay
