Dartmoor Prison Museum, Devon

  • Located in Princetown, Devon, South West England, England
  • Few buildings in Dartmoor National Park dominate their surroundings. The National Trust's Castle Drogo is visible for miles around on a lip of the Teign Gorge. The 'Cathedral of the Moor', or Widecombe St Pancras Church, rises from a valley floor in the eastern section of the National Park. Arguably the most impressive stucture is Dartmoor Prison. Built at the beginning of the 19th century to house French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic campaigns, the buildings were in use as a prison by 1850. The prisoner of war camp turned convict prison has a fascinating history that's explored in displays and via plenty of information boards. There's lots to take in, so reserve a good chunk of time for your visit
  • Dartmoor Prison Museum is a short walk from the centre of Princetown. There's a car park at the museum. We've positioned the attraction on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its location
  • If this type of attraction is of interest, also visit Bodmin Jail on the edge of Bodmin Moor and English Heritage's Lydford Castle on the western fringe of Dartmoor National Park. Both have grim stories to tell
