Chapel Carn Brea, Cornwall

  • Located in St. Just, Cornwall, South West England, England
  • Chapel Carn Brea is the most westerly hill in Britain. It's named after a medieval hermitage and chapel that stood on the hill. From its summit, the views of The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) and the sea are magnificent. We've positioned Chapel Carn Brea on Google maps so zoom in on the 'Satellite' setting to see its exact location. There's a car park clearly visible on that satellite imagery. A path climbs to the top of the hill
  • There's a plaque in the car park providing a short history of the hill: 'CHAPEL CARN BREA. THIS HILL, THE MOST WESTERLY IN BRITAIN, HAS LONG BEEN AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK. THE BRONZE AGE SUMMIT CAIRN, OF A TYPE FOUND ONLY IN SCILLY AND WEST CORNWALL, IS SURROUNDED BY SMALLER BURIAL MONUMENTS. IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, A HERMITAGE AND CHAPEL STOOD HERE, GIVING THE HILL ITS NAME. THE ASSOCIATED BEACON WAS MAINTAINED BY THE FISHERMEN OF ST. JUST AND IS STILL LIT EVERY MIDSUMMER EVE. DURING THE LAST WAR, A MILITARY OBSERVATION POST WAS BUILT INTO THE CAIRN AS PART OF A SMALL RADAR STATION.'
  • Chapel Carn Brea is not to be confused with Carn Brea up by Redruth
