Castle Combe St. Andrew's Church, Wiltshire

  • Located in Castle Combe, Wiltshire, South West England, England
  • Built on the site of a Norman church, the building we see today dates from the 13th century. The tower was built in the 15th century and funded from proceeds from the lucrative Cotswolds wool and cloth industry. As is the case with so many churches across the UK, the building was heavily restored in the Victorian era
  • Inside, look out for the special clock. An information board in the church reads: 'This is one of the earliest working clocks in England, probably installed when the tower completed, before 1500. Naturally worn parts, notably the escapement mechanism, have been replaced. There is no face. When it was installed, men working in the fields needed to know only the hour, so the hours are struck on a large bell'
