Broad Barrow, Devon

  • Located in Widecombe in the Moor, Devon, South West England, England
  • Hamel Down is a huge hog's back of moorland located towards the centre of Dartmoor National Park. A section of the Two Moors Way runs along its spine. On the Hamel Down section of this long distance trail are a number of ancient barrows. The most prominent is Broad Barrow
  • You'll see Broad Barrow from a long way off. At 532 metres above sea level, it's the highest point on Hamel Down. There's a boundary stone marked 'BROAD BURROW' to confirm where you are. Note the inscription 'DS 1854' on the reverse of all the boundary stones you encounter in this area. The Duke of Somerset had them erected to mark the boundary of his land. Similar boundary stones are found at Single Barrow, Two Barrows, Hameldown Beacon, Grey Wethers and Blue Jug. We've used the names from the Ordnance Survey Explorer OL28 'Dartmoor' map. The spellings are different on the stones themselves
  • The views from the top of Broad Barrow are huge. On a sunny day, high moorland and blue sea form the horizon. Rocky granite tors and scars left by the tin mining industry provide detail in the foreground. You'll see Tor Bay and Torquay, the coast by Teignmouth and the sea meeting South Devon. Within the National Park, to the east and south east are the distinctive Hound Tor (East Dartmoor) and Haytor Rocks. To the north east is Dartmoor's highest ground and the domes of Cut Hill and Hangingstone Hill. West is the rocky summit of Great Mis Tor. The radio and TV mast at North Hessary Tor is clearly visible. South west is the high south plateau of the National Park. It's intoxicating stuff
