Battle of Lydford, Devon

  • Located in Lydford, Devon, South West England, England
  • Lydford was once an important Saxon burgh or fortified town. It was the seat of local government and a Royal Mint. In 997, Vikings made their way up the Tamar Valley to plunder its wealth. Local people headed for the protection of the fortified town. The Vikings were unable to take Lydford and retreated to Tavistock where they sacked its abbey. These events are commemorated by the Battle of Lydford monument in the village
  • The monument is located across the road from Lydford St Petroc's Church. There's a Viking axe and a Saxon shield on top of a sturdy column of granite. A plaque reads: 'Llydanforde. SITE OF DANISH SAXON CONFLICT. 997 AD TO COMMEMORATE THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF LYDFORD W.I. 1920-1990'
  • Whilst you're there, look out for the replica of a Viking runestone in the strip of land between the church and Lydford Castle
  • By James Penman
