Avebury Stone Circle World Heritage Site, Wiltshire

  • Located in Avebury, Wiltshire, South West England, England
  • nr Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 1RF
  • One of Europe’s finest stone circles, the henge encircles much of the pretty Wiltshire village Avebury
  • In 1986, Avebury Stone Circle and nearby Stonehenge were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • First built over 5000 years ago, today you'll see huge earthworks and standing stones. Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk up to the stones and follow a track around the earthworks. We've located Avebury on Google maps so zoom in on the satellite setting to see more detail
  • There's a large car park just off the A4361. It's then a short walk to the village and stone circle. Given its international importance, the site can get very busy
  • Avebury stone circle is located next to Silbury Hill, the largest man-made hill in Europe. There's also a notable burial chamber close by with spectacular views across the Marlborough Downs
  • Avebury and its various attractions are managed and administered by The National Trust
  • To learn more about Avebury Stone Circle and the history of the surrounding landscape, we'd recommend spending time exploring the exhibits at the Alexander Keiller Museum and Barn Exhibition. These are located by the stone circle. There's a good cafe and shop, too
  • Whilst you're there, also pop into the National Trust's Avebury Manor And Garden which was the subject of a BBC and Natural Trust programme filmed during 2011
  • We'd also suggest you walk a section of the The Ridgeway National Trail. The downland here is remarkably beautiful. Follow the road east from Avebury and it turns into a wide track that climbs the flank of the down to the ridgeline and the National Trail
