Abbot's Way, Devon

  • Located in Devon, South West England, England
  • Dartmoor National Park consists of two areas of high moorland. The first is to the north and north west of the Park. The second is to the south. It's across the southern area of the Park that what is referred to on maps as the 'Abbot's Way' is supposed to run
  • Supposed, because, unlike the Two Moors Way, the Abbot's Way isn't clearly defined or waymarked. It's most probably a series of ancient paths that have been used for thousands of years. With the founding of the abbeys and priory that fringe the southern moors, the ancient paths became monastic routes replete with granite crosses as waymarkers
  • We've walked the moors and these paths for years. The stretch that runs across the north shore of the Avon Dam Reservoir is particularly beautiful and we would recommend it highly. This is the stretch of the Abbot's Way that's represented on the Ordnance Survey OL 28 'Dartmoor' map by the Avon Dam Reservoir. Try also the area around Siward's or Nun's Cross and Nun's Cross Farm
  • The 'Abbot's' refers to the three abbeys and priory at the start/end of the routes. To the east is Buckfast Abbey in Buckfastleigh. This was built upon the site of a much older abbey. To the west are the ruins of Tavistock Abbey in the centre of Tavistock. Beyond that is Buckland Abbey. Last, there's Plympton Priory
  • Other long distance routes in Dartmoor National Park include the Two Moors Way, Dartmoor Way, Granite Way and sections of the Tarka Trail, West Devon Way and Two Castle Trail
  • *We use both the Ordnance Survey OL 28 'Dartmoor' map and the Harvey British Mountain Map 'Dartmoor' when researching the Park. On the Harvery British Mountain Map, the Jobber's Road is clearly marked to the east of Burrator Reservoir
