The village
Situated within Cranborne Chase on the Wiltshire border, there are thatched houses and a village pond. Above the village is King John's hunting lodge dating from the 12th century; the house isn't open to the public but the friendly village pub is named after it. The house is owned by the Pitt Rivers family. In the 19th Century General Pitt Rivers,'the father of modern archaeology' made many excavations nearby including the Roman Camp at Woodcutts Common.

Things to do nearby
General Pitt Rivers also created the nearby Larmer Tree Gardens which contain an arboretum and several pavilions rescued from the Great Exhibition of 1851. The gardens now host the Larmer Tree Music Festival every July with Jools Holland, and also the last music festival of the season called the End of the Road.

Ashcombe Estate, in a nearby hidden valley, was once lived in by Cecil Beaton and visited by Greta Garbo. There is a footpath up the edge of the valley from the village pond that climbs up to Win Green.

Other walks include the intriguingly named Tinkley's Bottom and the Chase Woods. There is a nine hole golf course at Rushmore and an airfield at Compton Abbas. Old Wardour Castle, Chettle House and Shaftesbury are all within easy striking distance.
