Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Essential visiting
Stratford upon Avon is a beautiful, historic market town, nestling close to the River Avon and situated in the very heart of England. It has good access to major motorways and airports, is approximately 1 1/2hrs from London and an ideal base for visiting nearby Warwick Castle, the Cotswolds and Birmingham.

Stratford upon Avon takes its name from the 'straet' to the 'ford' on the 'river' and its rich history goes back to the Bronze age. In 1196 Stratford was granted a market charter by King Richard 1 and markets were held in most streets, bringing prosperity to the town. Sheep were sold in Sheep Street, Rother or long-horned cattle in Rother Street and pigs in Swine Street. Rother Market still hosts traditional and Farmers Markets at weekends but the cattle market is now held out of town.

William Shakespeare is Stratford's most famous son and all around the town there are reminders of the great man. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust own and care for 5 houses associated with Shakespeare and his family, including his Birthplace. All are open to visitors and several have beautiful gardens to enjoy. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is an impressive building where William Shakespeare's plays are performed by world-class actors. The impressive building towers over the Bancroft Gardens where jugglers and fire eaters entertain the crowds. Many people sit and and watch the world go by, soaking up the sun and enjoying the atmosphere.

Strolling around the town gives you a feel of how Stratford looked in days gone by. There are half timbered buildings as well as Victorian amd Regency buildings which blend with more modern architecture. Wander alongside the sparkling River Avon to the magnificent Holy Trinity Church dating back to the 1200's where the 'cursed' grave of William Shakespeare lies.

Discover the eclectic mix of shops selling antiques, books and art, hidden away in narrow back streets as well as the major high street stores. Pavement cafes and award winning tea shops bring a touch of the Continent to this medieval town. Enjoy a leisurely lunch or evening meal in one of the restaurants or pubs and don't be surprised if you see a famous face. This is after all the home of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Stratford has a wide range of accommodation, catering for all budgets. There are guest houses with gleaming windows and shiny door knockers, creaky half-timbered hotels as well as boutique and budget hotels. Whether on a repeat visit or seeking to discover somewhere new, Stratford looks forward to giving you a warm welcome.
