In North Wales, inland from the Lleyn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The National Park stretches from close to the north coast at Conwy down south past Dolgellau in Gwynedd. The vast majority of the Park is in Gwynedd. Compact yet rugged with some of the UK’s most breathtaking scenery. Craggy peaks tower over the visitor to the north around the Snowdon massif and south around Cadair Idris. In between are smaller mountain ranges, forests and lakes. On a small scale in comparison to the wilderness of Scotland but a must for those passionate about mountains. Established in 1951 and ‘Eryri’ in Welsh. Attracts in the region of 6 million visitors a year. Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales at 3,560ft (1,085m) above sea level. Wildly popular with hikers. Those wanting the views without the effort can take the train to its summit. Dolgellau is a fine base from which to explore the south of the Park, our favourite is Beddgelert to the north. Betws y Coed is exceptionally popular and a great place to shop for your outdoor kit. Check out our 'Top 10 Recommendations' for other ideas as to where to base yourself for a holiday or weekend away. Snowdonia National Park is surrounded by a ring of UNESCO World Heritage Site casltes (UNESCO ‘Castles and Town Walls of King Edward I of Gwynedd – Harlech Castle, Beaumaris Castle, Caernarfon Castle, Conwy Castle). The Park has one of its boundaries along the coastline. If coastal scenery is your thing or you fancy a break from the mountains, we'd recommend exploring Shell Island and the area around Harlech. We've been researching Snowdonia National Park for about a decade now, have climbed nearly all of its mountains and can assure that there's plenty to do when the rain sets in. Try the area's various museums and mines, the castles mentioned above and its shops. [Information provided by picturetheuk] External Links www.eryri-npa.gov.uk |
