The Cairngorm Mountains NSA, Visitor & Tourism Guide

A National Scenic Area within a Park
The Cairngorm Mountains NSA is located within the Cairngorms National Park and covers the highest continuous area of land within the UK (clearly, Ben Nevis in the Ben Nevis & Glencoe NSA is the highest point).

A massive granite plateau (the Cairngorm Plateau) fringed by forests, the NSA is home to many of the UK's highest mountains including Ben Macdhui (1309 m), Braeriach (1296 m), Cairn Toul (1293 m) and Cairn Gorm (1245 m).

To explore the forests, try Glenmore Forest Park just east of Aviemore or Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve on the shore of Loch Garten. Here you'll experience what remains of the vast native Caledonian Pine Forest that once covered this area.

Location
To the centre and east of Scotland. South of Inverness. West of Aberdeen. North of Edinburgh. North east of Glasgow. The A9 runs through the National Park to Aviemore and, roughly, marks the north of the NSA. To its west is Glen Feshie/the River Feshie below Kincraig. To the east is Glen Builg and Loch Builg. To the south is Gleldie Burn.

Click on the 'Satellite' setting of the Google map to see the Cairngorm Plateau and its surrounding glens and forests, lochs and rivers. It's easy to see the high mountains and the deep cuts in the landscape around them.

Skiing and wildlife
Given its height and location, snow stays on the Cairngorm Plateau for long stretches of the year. This attracts plenty of skiers and snowboarders to the ski runs around Cairn Gorm.

There are also some extraodinary opportunities to experience wildlife. Try The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre by Loch Morlich in the Glenmore Forest Park and Kincraig Highland Wildlife Park by Kincraig on the north west border of the NSA. The former is the 'UK's only herd of reindeer roaming freely in their own natural environment' and in the latter you'll find European bison and wolves, artic fox and polar bear!

Aviemore and Loch Garten
When exploring the area, most people head to Aviemore. Try Kingussie, too.

Last, visit Loch Garten and its famous RSPB Nature Reserve. As the RSPB membership booklet says, 'when ospreys returned to breed in Scotland, this ancient Caledonian pinewood is where they chose to come'.
