The Broads National Park, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Norfolk and Suffolk border
On the east coast of England in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. Its border looks out to the North Sea. An easy drive north east of London. Norfolk's main city, Norwich, is on the edge of the Park. The Norfolk Coast AONB is to the north west, the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB to the south.

What is a 'broad'?
A ‘broad’ is the local term for the navigable rivers and lakes in this area. There are 125 miles or 200 km of waterways.

The UK’s largest protected wetland and its third largest inland waterway. Extremely popular with boating enthusiasts. Formed when people dug for peat in medieval times leaving trenches that were filled with water when the area later flooded. Famous for its windmills.

Places in which to base yourself
Base yourself in Wroxham, Stalham, Brundall, Acle, Loddon, Beccles and Oulton Broad within the National Park. Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Norwich are larger destinations on the fringes of the Park.

Cromer is to the north west and Southwold to the south if you fancy a day-trip from or into The Broads.

Millions of visitors
Designated a National Park in 1989 with about 6 million visitors a year. 305 square kilometres with nearly 3 kilometres of coastline.

There's the Museum of the Broads at Stalham and the National Trust Wind Pump at Horsey, the Roman Burgh Castle and Somerleyton Hall. For family fun, head for BeWILDerwood at Hoveton in the north west of The Broads.
