Straddling the Devon and Cornwall border
In
South West England straddling the border of south west
Devon and north east
Cornwall. The Tamar Valley AONB runs into
Dartmoor National Park to the east and covers the area around the Rivers
Tamar and
Tavy.
Plymouth is to the south and east of the AONB.
Rivers Tamar and Tavy
Steep hills thick with trees rise from the Rivers
Tamar and
Tavy. Further towards the coast, there are wide, long stretches of water in the estuary. Fine views south to the
Tamar Bridges. Deserves its status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Part of the
Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site,
Morwellham Quay is a fascinating open air museum.
Calstock Viaduct and
Calstock are magnificent. We'd also recommend visiting the National Trust properties of
Buckland Abbey and
Cotehele House and Gardens.
Stretch your legs at
Kit Hill Country Park for amazing panoramic views of the Tamar Valley AONB, mid
Cornwall and
Dartmoor National Park.
The Cornwall AONB
Just to the south is one of the 12 areas that make up the
Cornwall AONB. We'd strongly recommend visiting
Whitsand Bay as well which is on the south coast on the fringes of both the Tamar Valley AONB and the abovementioned area of the Cornwall AONB.
Bodmin Moor is to the west of the Tamar Valley AONB.
