Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Coast and heathland
In the East of England on the Suffolk coast.

Runs from the mouths of the rivers Orwell and Stour in the south of the AONB (around Harwich, Felixstowe and Ipswich) up through Aldeburgh to Southwold. Lowestoft is just to the north of the AONB. It is ‘the mix of shingle beaches, crumbling cliffs, marshes, estuaries, heathland, forests and farmland that makes the AONB so special’ (source: Suffolk Coast and Heaths website, link provided). Much of the coastline is part of the Suffolk Heritage Coast, the heathland is ancient and rare within the UK.

The Broads National Park is to the north and the Norfolk Coast AONB to the north west of that. The Dedham Vale AONB is to the south west.

The AONB cover the estuaries of five rivers: Stour, Orwell, Deben, Alde and Blythe.

Popular Southwold and Aldeburgh
Within the AONB, the most obvious destination in which to base yourself for a holiday or short break are Southwold and Aldeburgh. Woodbridge, Ipswich and Lowestoft are on its boundaries. Try also the small towns of Dunwich and Orford.

Beaches and heathland, marshes and nature reserves
For beaches, head for Southwold and Benacre (all the way to the north of the AONB by Kessingland), for heathland try Dunwich Heath and Blaxhall Heath. Orford Ness is an eleven mile long shingle spit and Havergate Island an island nature reserve. Experience the AONBs many marshes and reedbeds, nature reserves and rivers.

Orford Castle and Ness, Sutton Hoo, the cliff-top monastic remains of Greyfriars and Snape Maltings, home to the Aldeburgh Festival.
