Villages in South West England
South West England is known for its pretty harbour villages. The region is also home to some of the UK's most impressive inland villages, espcecially within the Cotswolds. Browse our 'Top 10 Recommended Villages in South West England' for ideas. We'd also suggest you take a look at our other 'Top 10' lists for further inspiration. By James Penman.

Lynmouth, Devon

On the Exmoor National Park coastline. Markets itself as 'England's little Switzerland'. The National Trust's Watersmeet is inland. Try Porlock and Porlock Weir, too.

Castle Combe, Wiltshire

Said to be the prettiest village in England. In the south of the Cotswolds AONB and close to the stunning Bradford-on-Avon and Bath City UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lacock, another cracking village, is to the south east.

Sennen, Cornwall

Cornwall's full of wondeful fishing villages (check out our Top 10 Recommended Villages in the Cornwall section) but this place never ceases to amaze. Special. Close to Land's End and St. Ives on The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula).

Bibury, Gloucestershire

Perhaps the inhabitants and tourism businesses of Castle Combe will disagree but William Morris descibed Bibury as 'the most beautiful village in England'. Another Cotswolds AONB cracker.

Clovelly, Devon

Built into the side of steep, wooded coastline in The Hartland Peninsula in the North Devon AONB. Exceptionally beautiful and exceptionally popular. Costs to enter, though.

Lacock Village, Wiltshire

One of many National Trust owned villages in the UK. As is the case with all the villages on this list, it's stunning, but when visiting Lacock you get the bonus of Lacock Abbey (Harry Potter location), the Fox Talbot Museum and Bowood House and Gardens nearby.

Beer, Devon

One of our favourites in the East Devon AONB. Beautiful village strung out along its main road leading to an exceptional pebble beach set beneath white cliffs. Fishing boats, walkways, cafes, deck chairs on beach. Top views east.

West Lulworth, Dorset

Famous for its cove and proximity to Durdle Door. From here you can walk some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the South West region on the South West Coast Path.

Dunster

A gateway village to Exmoor National Park in Somerset. Its castle and yarn market are great. Explore Dunster Estate.

Abbotsbury, Dorset

Nestled in rolling hills behind Chesil Beach within the Dorset AONB. Beautiful and, for its size, packed with things to do.
