Tors in South West England
A tor is a rocky outcrop. South West England, especially in Dartmoor National Park and Bodmin Moor, has hundreds of them. If you spend time exploring this part of the world, you see similar rock structures from the south west tip of Cornwall on the The Land's End Peninsula (The Penwith Peninsula) all the way up into Devon. Further north east, there's the internationally famous tor at Glastonbury. Browse our 'Top 10 Recommended Tors in South West England' to discover more. We'd also suggest you read our 'Top 10 Recommended Tors in Dartmoor National Park' list. By James Penman.

Rough Tor

In the north west of Bodmin Moor. Easily accessible with some quite superb rock structures. Try Showery Tor and Brown Willy in the local area.

Great Staple Tor, Devon

One of Dartmoor's finest. In the west of the Park up the road from Tavistock. If you can catch late light as the sun sets in the west, you'll see these rock structures at their best.

Haytor Rocks

Perhaps South West England's most famous tor. Exceptionally popular. In the local area, try Hound Tor (East Dartmoor).

Sharp Tor (Salcombe), Devon

On the South West Coast Path in the South Devon AONB. From its top, there are quite exceptional views of The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary.

Yes Tor, Devon

Along with High Willhays, this is the highest ground in southern England. On a clear day, the views to the Cornwall coast and Exmoor National Park are superb.

Leather Tor

Beautiful fin of rock by Burrator Reservoir. A miniature version of the mighty Tryfan in Snowdonia National Park. Great for a scramble.

Glastonbury Tor

Internationally famous tor in Somerset. In the local area, make sure you visit Wells Cathedral.

Fur Tor, Devon

Arguably the most remote area in southern England. It's a big yomp in to get to the tor but the views and rock structures are reward enough.

Kilmar Tor, Cornwall

A massive ridge of rock in the eastern section of Bodmin Moor. Great for a scramble and offers fine views of the western edge of Dartmoor National Park.

Great Mis Tor

A high tor in Dartmoor National Park. Superb panoramic views.
