South East England, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Cradling London
In the south eastern corner of the UK, cradling London.

The South West region is, surprise, to the west and the East of England region to the north. Also shares a short border with both the East and West Midlands. To the south is the English Channel and across the water is continental Europe.

The region consists of the counties of Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Just off its coastline is the Isle of Wight.

National Parks and Natural Beauty
Home to two National Parks. The South Downs National Park combines two former AONBs (East Hampshire and the Sussex Downs). The New Forest National Park is a mesmerising area of unenclosed heathland and forest famed for its ponies.

The South East is rich in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Perhaps the most well known is the Chilterns although the Kent Downs, High Weald and Surrey Hills are equally as stunning. On the coast is Chichester Harbour and across the water is the Isle of Wight AONB.

From great cities to beautiful villages
For cities, head to Brighton for hedonism, Winchester for culture and Portsmouth for history. Oxford needs no introduction and is a good base to explore counties in this region and some in the South West.

If you're looking for something a little more intimate try the towns of Arundel and Rye or the villages of Turville and Hambleden.

World Heritage Sites and world class attractions
The region contains one of the UK's most recognisable landmarks in the Seven Sisters and white chalk cliffs that span sections of its south eastern coast.

There are world class attractions including Blenheim Palace World Heritage Site, Windsor Castle and Canterbury Cathedral World Heritage Site.

If castles are your thing then you're spoiled for choice. Bodiam Castle has to be one of the most beautiful castles in the world and Dover Castle one of its most imposing. If you're looking for cathedrals then try Winchester Cathedral and Chichester Cathedral.

Owing to its proximity to London, it's easy to explore England's capital city when staying in one of the counties within the South East.
