Shropshire Hills AONB, Visitor & Tourism Guide

To the south and west of Shropshire on the England/Wales border. Mid-Wales is to the west and Wolverhampton then Birmingham to the east.

Church Stretton is the major town within the AONB and on its borders youíll find Ludlow, Much Wenlock and Bishopís Castle. Shrewsbury is to the north.

As the AONB's name suggests, the area is known for its stunning hills. If youíve driven on the M54, youíll have seen The Wrekin which dominates the skyline to the north east of the AONB. To the north west are The Stiperstones and to the south west the Black Mountains and Clun Valley. Over in the south east, you can summit Titterstone Clee and Brown Clee Hills. Perhaps most famous is The Long Mynd towards the centre of the AONB by Church Stretton.

For things to do, try the gorgeous Stokesay Castle and Ludlow Castle, Hopton Castle and Clun Castle. Across the border is Powis Castle, too. On the border of the AONB up by The Wrekin is the Ironbridge UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Clearly, itís a fine place for walking or horse riding. Offaís Dyke is an obvious track but you canít really go wrong with any of the ranges of hills above.

To the south and south west of the AONB, youíll find the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Wye Valley AONB. The Malvern Hills and Cotswolds AONBs are to the south east.
