Orkney Islands, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Just ten kilometres north of the Scottish mainland
Off the north coast of Scotland. South of the Shetlands.

The Orkneys are made up of about 70 islands and have a population of about 20,000. The administrative HQ is Kirkwall with its magnificent St Magnus Cathedral which dates from the twelfth century. The Norman architecture is attributed to the builders of Durham Cathedral World Heritage Site. To the south west of Mainland Orkney is Stromness.

UNESCO World Heritage
Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ‘Heart of Neolithic Orkney’. Maes Howe, the Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brogar and, most famously, the prehistoric village of Skara Brae can all be found on Mainland Orkney. They offer a fascinating glimpse into life here up to 5000 years ago.

The Orkney Islands are home to one of Scotland's many National Scenic Areas. The Hoy & West Mainland NSA is to the south west of the archipelago.

Famous sea stacks
The Orkney Islands are perhaps most well know for the sea stack Old Man Of Hoy. First climbed by Chris Bonnington in 1966, a year later 23 million people watched a live ascent of the sea stack filmed by the BBC. As its name suggest, ‘The Old Man’ is on Hoy, an island south of Mainland Orkney so, if time’s tight head for Yesnaby Castle Rock Stack on the mainland to the west of the Ring of Brogar.

Getting there
Take a ferry or fly.

Flights leave from many major UK airports such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen. By sea, take a ferry from Aberdeen or, at the top of mainland Scotland, Scrabster, Gill’s Bay or the famous John O’Groats. Refer to the Visit Orkney link below for further information.
