Holy Island, Northumberland, Visitor Guide

A tidal island off the north east coast of England within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The island is also a National Nature Reserve.

The world famous Lindisfarne Gospels, which can be seen today in the British Library, were produced here around 700AD. A first monastery was built in the early seventh century but was later destroyed by Vikings. The castle visitors see today was built from the remains of this monastery.

A second monastery was built close to the village and this was destroyed during The Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Views south to Bamburgh Castle and west across the tidal waters to Northumberland National Park and the Cheviot Hills.
