Northumberland, Visitor & Tourism Guide
At some point in the future, people en masse are going to realise that this place is special. It may be at the opposite end of
England but Northumberland is in many ways similar to
Devon, the county in which, apparently, most Brits want to live. Our advice is to visit Northumberland now before the crowds descend as it's a sublime place.
Rolling mountains,
heather purple hills,
blond beaches,
prehistoric sites, the most magnificent collection of
castles in the UK, site of the most dramatic stretch of
Hadrian's Wall and some of the most complete
Roman forts in Europe. Throw in great local food and drink and you're beginning to understand why the county excites us so much. You r
eally should just go.
Located in
North East England, Northumberland's on the
Scotland/
England border.
Cumbria is to the west and south west,
Durham to the south, the metropolitan county of
Tyne and Wear to the south east. There's a long and exceptional stretch of coastline. (
* A note on counties).
Northumberland has a
National Park and one of the UK's most wondeful
Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There's a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world famous
Holy Island.
Towns include
Alnwick,
Amble,
Rothbury,
Hexham,
Berwick-upon-Tweed and
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea; villages
Alnmouth,
Bamburgh,
Ingram,
Alwinton and
Warkworth.
If you're heading out with a bucket and spade, we'd recommend
Alnmouth Beach,
Bamburgh Beach and Dunes and
Holy Island. The coastal walking around these places is also excpetional. Try also
Craster to the awesome
Dunstanburgh Castle.
There's a vast quantity of culture and history too, from the obvious
Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site to the less well known Bamburgh's Grace Darling Museum, the inspirational
Lindisfarne Priory to the historically important
Cragside House and Gardens. If castles are your thing, make sure you book an extra week, for example:
Alnwick Castle and Gardens,
Bamburgh Castle,
Dunstanburgh Castle,
Warkworth Castle and
Lindisfarne Castle. You'll most probably also want to visit
Housesteads Roman Fort,
Berwick-upon-Tweed Ramparts and
Vindolanda and Chesterholm Museum.
And then there are the hills and lakes :-) Walk in the
Simonside Hills or
Cheviot Hills, stroll along the
River Coquet, try water sports in
Kielder Water and Forest Park.
You really should just go.
