Liverpool and Manchester, the Lakes and Pennines
Place big, culturally and historically important cities such as Liverpool and Manchester next to awesome natural beauty such as the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines and you have North West England. A must in your journey around the UK.
To the north west of England. On the Scotland/England border. The Yorkshire and The Humber region to the south and east, North East England to the east, The Lowlands of Scotland to the north, the West Midlands to the south and the East Midlands to the south east.
The North West region consists of Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. The densely populated, buzzing metropolitan counties contrast with stunning landscapes of the Lake District National Park.
National Parks
The Lakes. Perhaps the UK's most well known National Park and one of its most well visited. About 10 million people experience its landscape every year spending, it's estimated, a staggering £700 million. It's a popular place.
The Peak District National Park edges into the south east of this region.
Greater Manchester and Merseyside
Greater Manchester has a population of about 2.5 million people, Merseyside about 1.4 million. Large areas of Liverpool form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, both cities have world class museums and galleries.
AONBs and Hadrian's Wall
The region's natural beauty doesn't stop at National Parks. There are four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty here. Solway Coast AONB, North Pennines AONB, Arnside and Silverdale AONB and Forest of Bowland AONB.
There's the western section of Hardrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site, too.
Blackpool
And then there's Blackpool. Don't forget Blackpool.
