New Forest National Park, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Contrasts
We've explored all of the UK's National Parks and many of its AONBs/NSAs but crossing the New Forest National Park boundary is an experience like no other. Surrounded by suburbs and, in part, pleasant rolling countryside, you enter a vast area of unenclosed heathland and forest. It's a wonderful experience.

On the south coast of England, in south west Hampshire and parts of Wiltshire. Next to Southampton and an easy drive down the M3 from London. The South Downs National Park is to the east.

Once a Royal hunting forest
As we said, it's a vast area of heathland and forest with ponies (they get the right of way) and deer. Once a Royal hunting forest, and despite its National Park status, still around 90% of its land is owned by the Crown.

Established in 2005 and covering 571 square km of land, around 34,000 people live here and in the region of 13 million visitor days are made every year.

A very rare primeval oak wood
A very rare primeval oak wood, it's a great place in which to walk and observe wildlife. It's not lung-busting yomping up craggy mountains but rather more relaxing walking and it's a fine Park to which to bring young children.

Places in which to base yourself
Within the Park, try Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Burley. Lyndhurst is in the heart of the New Forest and offers great access to its other destinations and attractions.

On its fringes, try Southampton, Christchurch, Bournemouth and Ringwood. A little further away, but both spectacular, are Salisbury and Winchester.

Weekend breaks
If time's tight, a weekend break for example, we'd recommend heading down to the Beaulieu area. Close to the coast, there's a concentration of top attractions here from Beaulieu National Motor Museum to Beaulieu Palace House and Gardens, Bucklers Hard to Exbury. It's a beautiful spot within the Park.

Attractions
Other attractions include the Otter, Owl & Wildlife Park, Furzey Gardens, the Rufus Stone,New Forest Museum and Visitor Centre and the Liberty Raptor and Reptile Centre. Just outside the Park and worth a visit is Rockbourne Roman Villa.

The Isle of Wight
On the coast and border of the Park is Lymington. Catch a ferry across The Solent to the Isle of Wight.
