In north Devon and mostly west Somerset stretching out along the coast overlooking the Bristol Channel and moving inland onto high moorland.
Exmoor takes in the Brendon Hills to the east of the Park and and the Vale of Porlock by the north coast. The landscape is a mix of open moorland and cliffs, coves and steep wooded valleys. Established in 1954. About 70% of the Park is in Somerset and 30% in Devon. Like Dartmoor National Park, once a Royal Forest and hunting ground. At 1,700ft (520m), its highest point is Dunkery Beacon. The views to Dartmoor National Park in the south and across the Bristol Channel to south Wales are exceptional. If you're heading in from the east, take some time to explore Dunster, its castle and yarn market. A fascinating and beautiful place a short distance from Minehead and the eastern boundary of the Park. RD Blackmore’s famous novel ‘Lorna Doone’ was set here.
