Everything for a perfect holiday or weekend break
Birthplace of one of the world's great
scientists and one of the UK's most controversial
politicians, home to some of Europe's finest architecture and
England's most stunning towns, Lincolnshire offers pretty much everything for a perfect holiday or weekend break.
In the
East Midlands with a long coastline facing out towards the North Sea. Surrounded by the
East Riding of Yorkshire,
South Yorkshire,
Nottinghamshire,
Leicestershire,
Northamptonshire,
Cambridgeshire and
Norfolk.
Exceptional coast and some of the UK's best destinations
Most visitors head for the coast with destinations such as
Cleethorpes and
Skegness being particularly popular. Inland, you'll find the rolling hills of the
Lincolnshire Wolds AONB and some cracking destinations.
The city of
Lincoln and the town of
Stamford are as impressive as anything in the UK. Visit Lincolnshire for these alone.
Historical goodies and fine architecture
The county's a historical treat. Where the
Pilgrim Fathers 'made their first attempt to find religious freedom across the seas' and where one of four copies of the UK's most important and famous
legal documents resides.
And then there's that architecture.
Lincoln Cathedral is simply magnificent and a masterpiece of English Gothic architecture. The county's country houses are essential visiting, too. Try
Burghley House and
Belton House.
Beaches and nature reserves
The coastline offers great
beaches and a couple of top nature reserves.
Donna Nook Nature Reserve is to the north,
Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve to the south. On the edge of the
Lincolnshire Wolds AONB, we'ed recommend trying the
Snipe Dales Country Park and Nature Reserve.
For culture, visit the museum in
Lincoln Castle and
Museum of Lincolnshire Life. There are local museums at
Louth,
Skegness,
Grantham and
Grimsby.
Last, Lincolnshire has some wonderfully quirky details. Try the UK's first permanent cloud watching outpost called
Anderby Creek Cloud Bar or look for the state protected
beehive outside one of the oldest pubs in
Grantham. There are loads or
windmills, too!
