Kent, Visitor & Tourism Guide
At various points in history, Kent has been home to Dickens, Darwin and Churchill. The 'Garden of England' and home to some of England's great castles, a testament to its often very violent past. Where Julius Caesar landed in 55BC, where the Normans flooded into the country after victory in 1066. Beautiful, historically and culturally fascinating and a great place to eat and drink.
In the corner of South East England. English Channel's off its coast. To the north, Essex. Surrounded by East Sussex, Surrey and London. Kent is a 'Home County'. The 'North Downs' run east west across the county and to the south are The Weald and Romney Marsh.
Kent has two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the High Weald and Kent Downs. There's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, too, covering Canterbury Cathedral, St. Augustine's Abbey and St. Martin's Church. St Augustine brought Christianity here in the 6th century.
Its villages and towns are often stunning. Try Chiddingstone village owned by the National Trust or the picturesque coastal town of Deal or the inland town of Royal Tunbridge Wells set in the magnificent countryside of The Weald.
Rochester oozes history with its castle and cathedral and, nearby, Chatham's Historic Docks were founded by Henry VIII. Dover Castle's an absolute treat and, owing to its size, a full day out. Leeds Castle is spectacular, Hever and the Tudor mansion Knole not far behind.
Canterbury with its many attractions is a must, Margate is a popular seaside resort on the coast.
And look out for the windmills and converted oast houses!
