Isle of Rum, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Part of The Small Isles
Off the north west coast of Scotland in the unitary authority of Highland. Part of The Small Isles and Inner Hebrides.

A short boat trip south west of the much larger Isle of Skye.

The main settlement is Kinloch.

Kinloch Castle
Holiday home to a wealthy industrialist, Kinloch Castle is a mix of Highland & Islands charm and what was, for the time, cutting edge technology. Central heating, power showers and even an organ commissioned by Queen Victoria that’s tucked away under the stairs.

Getting to Rum
When we researched Rum, we took a boat from Elgol. The views back to The Cuillin of Skye are exceptional.

Deer
Book a boat that explores the Rum coastline to see the deer that appear on the BBC programme ‘Autumnwatch'. The area around Kilmory Beach is great for this.

Midges
If visiting in late summer, as we did, prepare for midges.
