Isle of Anglesey, Visitor & Tourism Guide
World Heritage and healing wells, beaches and copper
In
North Wales. An island off the coast of
Gwynedd and north west of
Snowdonia National Park. The
Lleyn AONB is to the south. Two bridges span the
Menai Strait. The
Menai Suspension Bridge, considered to be the first modern suspension bridge in the world, is wonderful when lit up at night.
Pretty much all of the coast here falls within the
Anglesey AONB.
Beaumaris Castle and Penmon Priory
Beaumaris Castle World Heritage Site (part of the 'Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Harlech, Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Conwy (Gwynedd)' UNESCO World Heritage Site), is a short drive to the north east of
Menai Bridge. Beyond the castle, on the coast, is
Penmon Priory with its ancient healing well and a short walk away by a beach is
Puffin Island. The views back to
Snowdonia National Park from here are exceptional. In Beaumaris, also visit its
pier and Gaol & Courthouse Museum.
Beaches and coast
Unsurprisingly, the island is home to dozens of beaches, a handful of which have Blue Flag status. Try Cemaes Bay (north), Red Wharf Bay (east), Trearddur Bay (west) and Llanddwyn Bay/Island (south). Up by Holyhead is the popular
South Stack Lighthouse. On the coast, too, is
Llangwyfan, 'The Church in the Sea'.
Horse Riding
By Llanddwyn Bay/Island and Newborough Forest, you'll find Tal y Foel Riding (link provided).
History
In addition to its castle and religious buildings, there are many top prehistoric sites to experience (for example, the stunning Barclodiad y Gawres close to
Llangwyfan) as well as a fne National Trust property south of Menai Brodge called Plas Newydd.
Parys Mountain
Just south of
Amlwch is Parys Mountain, a copper mine with a lunar landscape. Excavations reveal that metal has been mined here for thousands of years. It's an extraordinary site. To learn more about the history of the island and its people, visit Oriel Ynys Mon just off the A55.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

longest place name in the UK and send it to us!
