Hatfield and Henry Moore, Verulamium and St Albans
Just north of London, this is a busy county. It's prime commuting territory for the City of London and there's fast train access to many of the major London train stations. The county has some world class attractions from Hatfield House to the Henry Moore Foundation, the Roman Verulamium to St Albans' Cathedral. We've researched the county over the period of a decade and it's a splendid place in which to holiday.
In the East of England. Surrounded by Essex, London, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire
The Chilterns AONB
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Chilterns, pushes its way up into Hertfordshire around Tring and Berkhamsted. Hemel Hempstead is to the east of the AONB's border. Attractions include Berkhamstead Castle, Tring's Natural History Museum, the National Trust Ashridge Estate on the Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire border and close by is the Iron Age hill fort at Ivinghoe Beacon on the Icknield Way (perhaps the UK's oldest road linking The Ridgeway to the Norfolk coast).
Towns and villages
The county town is Hertford. Other towns in which to base yourself include Hatfield, Berkhamsted, St. Albans and Tring.
Attractions
For culture, try the Hertford Museum, the Verulamium Museum, the Museum of St Albans, the Henry Moore Foundation and the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum.
If your interest is in history, try Hatfield House, Knebworth House and Gardens, Berkhamsted Castle, St Albans Cathedral, Verulamium and Ashridge. St Mary's Church in Ashwell has some astonishing medieval graffiti dating from the time of the Black Death*
For nature, we'd recommend Paradise Wildlife Park.
Last, Nicholas Breakspear was born in Hertfordshire in the twelfth century. Schooled at St Albans, he went on to become the only English Pope.
