Essex, Visitor & Tourism Guide

Constable Country and the Sunshine Coast
Staggering natural beauty and remarkable history, gorgeous coastline and pretty villages, Essex is very different from the stereotype dreamed up by hacks in the 80s. In parts, it’s stunning and a great place for a holiday.

In the East of England. Surrounded by Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and London. Kent to the south. The North Sea is off the coast.*

Natural Beauty
The county has an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Dedham Vale is to the north east on the banks of the River Stour and on the border with Suffolk. John Constable painted in this area. North of Dedham Vale is the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB and beyond that the The Broads National Park on the Suffolk and Norfolk border.

Places in which to base yourself
Try Saffron Walden and Thaxted, Walton-on-the-Naze and Manningtree. Try also Harwich, Clacton-on-Sea, Maldon and Dedham. Chelmsford is the county town.

Essex Sunshine Coast
There’s a wonderful coastline. Head for the beaches at Southend-on-Sea or Brightlingsea and Dovercourt which are part of the ’Essex Sunshine Coast’ or Tendring Peninsula (on the map, the area running from Harwich down to Clacton-on-Sea).

History and nature
Audley End House and Gardens is one of the finest Jacobean houses in England, Layer Marney Tower the tallest Tudor Gatehouse in England. Hylands House is set in 574 acres of parkland, RHS Garden Hyde Hall is beautiful the year round. Visit also the Beth Chatto Gardens and The Gibberd Garden. If you like castles, try Hedingham and Hadleigh, Stansted Mountfitchet and Colchester. Colchester, which has the largest Norman Keep in Europe, has a splendid museum. Visit Waltham Abbey and Ickworth House as well.

Wildlife and outdoors
For wildlife and the outdoors, try Colchester Zoo and Tropical Wings Zoo or one of the county's many Country Parks (for example, Hadleigh Country Park or Hainault Forest Country Park). Epping Forest and Hatfield Forest are very popular.

*Note: the North Sea becomes the English Channel beyond the Straits of Dover. In the north, it opens in a widening funnel shape to the Norwegian Sea, which lies in the very north-eastern part of the Atlantic.
