Northumberland National Park

In the far north east of England, from the Scottish border down to Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. The park lies north west of Newcastle.

‘England’s most tranquil place’ (according to its website) and they're probably right. The road from Alwinton into the MoD Otterburn Training Area is a blissful journey into the middle of nowhere.

The Park covers the ancient rolling Cheviot Hills to the north down through the MoD Otterburn Training Area and the Simonside Hills and the densely wooded Kielder Forest. On the southern boundary of the Park, there's Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site with Housesteads Roman Fort and Vindolanda and Sycamore Gap.

People have lived here for over 10,000 years. Although about a million people visit every year, it’s said to be the UK’s quietest National Park so our advice is to get up there and take advantage of the solitude whilst it lasts.

Established in 1956, the Park covers an area of 405 square miles or 1049 square km. The highest point is The Cheviot close to the Scottish border at 2,674ft (815m). The Cheviot Hills are the northernmost point of the Pennines, a mountain range running up the spine of England. The Park takes up about 25% of the county of Northumberland.
