Dartmoor National Park

'All my life I've been able to step outside the door and all the freedom right around you; all my life, I've never known anything different' George Shillibeer. Quote taken from an exhibition in the High Moorland Visitor Centre.

The most southerly of the UK’s National Parks, Dartmoor is located in Devon in South West England. The Park lies a short drive north east of Plymouth and south west of Exeter.

The last great wilderness in the south of England, Dartmoor National Park is home to the only two mountains in southern England. The wilder, higher ground in which these mountains are located lies to the north and west. Steep valleys and wooded cleaves can be found around the fringes of the Park.

Established in 1951, Dartmoor National Park covers 368 square miles (953 square km) and is famous for its granite tors of which there are about 160. Over 30,000 people live here. The highest point is High Willhays at 2,039 ft (621 m) and is easily accessible from the car park at Meldon Reservoir.

People have lived on these moors since prehistory with few areas in the UK having a higher concentration of prehistoric monuments. Once a royal hunting forest, in medieval times tin-mining flourished here. Today the British Army use areas of Dartmoor for their training and control around 30,000 acres.

Dartmoor Ponies roam the moors, hikers pound its trails. There are castles and gorges, museums and ancient woods. We recommend a visit in Spring and early Summer to see the wild flowers in full show.

Oh, and lanes can be sunken and hedges high so drive with care!
