Mesmerising landscape
An often mesmerising, beautiful landscape in the east of England which juts out into The North Sea. Shares a border with the East Midlands, South East England and London.

The East of England consists of the counties of Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

National Parks and AONBs
Contains the The Broads National Park. Much of its coastline is covered by two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. To the south is the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. To the north is the Norfolk Coast AONB. Large swathes of this coastline has been reclaimed from the sea over the centuries. The region is named after one of the German tribes that made their way to and settled in the UK 1500 years ago.

This is Constable Country, too, with a third Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at Dedham Vale. One of the UK's most famous paintings, 'The Hay Wain' by John Constable, was inspired by the landscape at Flatford Mill near Manningtree on the River Stour on the Suffolk/Essex border.

Cambridge and Cromwell, country houses and beaches
The region is home to the world famous Cambridge University and the exceptional cities of Ely, Norwich and Kings Lynn.

Oliver Cromwell, one of the UKs most notable figures from history, was born in the region.

With such a long coastline it follows that there are some extraordinary beaches. In Norfolk, try Holkham which was used as a location in the film 'Shakespeare In Love' (visit the magnificent Holkham Hall and Estate whilst you're there), Great Yarmouth, Overstrand, Cromer, Sheringham and Weybourne. In Suffolk, try Southwold and Lowestoft. In Essex, try Walton-on-the-Naze, Frinton-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea.
