Forest and coast, cathedral and castle
Think the most popular National Park in the UK, the most famous forest in the UK, one of the most glorious cathedrals in the UK, many of the finest country houses and castles in the UK, some of the finest coastline in the UK. We didn't know either before we started researching, travelling around and photographing the region. A perfect mix for a holiday.
To the east of central England. Shares a border with the Yorkshire and The Humber, North West England, West Midlands, South East England and East of England.
The East Midlands region consists of Northamptonshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
Peak District and Wolds
Perhaps start with the Peak District, the UK's first National Park. Established in 1951, it attracts a whopping 10 million visitors per year. Clearly a must if you are in the East Midlands.
There's exceptional walking country, too, in the Lincolnshire Wolds, the region's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Cromford Mill and Lincoln Cathedral
The East Midlands is also home to the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill at Cromford Mill and the mighty Lincoln Cathedral, the world famous Sherwood Forest and a stunning coastline taking in Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve and Donna Nook Nature Reserve. More recently, Princess Diana was buried at Althorp House near Northampton and the house, park and garden are popular with tourists.
And then there are the country houses and castles, some of the finest in the UK. Chatsworth, Burghley, Belton House, Belvoir Castle and Rockingham are here for the visiting.
Cities and towns
If you're looking for more of a buzz, some shopping, eating and drinking then try some of the regions major cities and towns including Lincoln, Nottingham, Stamford, Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and the delightfully named Ashby de la Zouch.
