Valley of the Rocks
Just north of
Babbacombe and
The English Riviera, Watcombe is located by a particularly beautiful stretch of coastline. Best known locally for its
Valley of Rocks and
beach, both the
South West Coast Path and
John Musgrave Heritage Trail pass by here.
Watcombe Beach is surrounded by high cliffs and there's a shop/cafe selling food and drink.
Head north on the
South West Coast Path and you arrive at another impressive, compact beach called
Maidencombe Beach. Beyond that, the coastal path rises and falls on its way to
Shaldon,
Teignmouth and the
Teign Estuary.
Follow the South West Coast Path to the south and you'll pass through
Babbacombe. With its
Model Village and
Cliff Railway,
Bygones museum and
beaches, there's plenty to do. Make sure you take in the view from on top of
Babbacombe Downs and Gardens. You'll see the
Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site across the water. Continue along the coastal path and you'll loop around the
Hope's Nose area, past the distinctive
Thatcher Rock out at sea, towards
Meadfoot Beach.
Tor Bay opens out in front of you.
Torquay Marina and
Living Coasts,
Torre Abbey and the
HiFlyer Balloon are all nearby. We particularly like
Kents Cavern.
Torquay Museum is well worth a visit, too.
The local area
North of Watcombe, around
Shaldon, we'd recommend
Shaldon Zoo and
The Coombe Cellars. In
Teignmouth, walk the promenade and visit
Teignmouth Pier. North west of Teignmouth is high ground. Try
Haldon Forest Park for its walking, biking and views west to
Dartmoor National Park.
South and south west of Watcombe is
The English Riviera. We'd recommend exploring
Paignton Harbour and
Goodrington Sands, taking a day trip to
Paignton Zoo and walking aboard
The Golden Hinde (Devon). Inland, try
Berry Pomeroy Castle and
Totnes Castle.
Further afield
You're spoilt for choice. To the north east is the
