National Parks: Dartmoor, Exmoor
AONBs: North Devon, East Devon, South Devon
Select Towns/Villages: Exeter, The English Riviera towns, Topsham, Chagford, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth

Mid-Devon destination
One of mid-Devon's major destinations just west of the M5. Exmoor National Park to the north and north west and Dartmoor National Park to the south west. Exeter is to the south. Clearly, Tiverton and its surrounding area are a great base to explore Devon as a whole.

Craftsmanship
If you have an interest in history or architecture, craftsmanship or design, we'd recommend spending (a long) time visiting Tiverton St Peter's Church. Medieval ships and monkeys, winged angels and biblical scenes have been carved into honey stone. The details are a joy.

Next door are the ruins of a castle built, along with the church, on a bluff high above the River Exe. Opening times are seasonal so check in advance.

Local wealth
As you walk south from the church and castle towards the town centre, you pass blue plaques which celebrate the lives of wealthy merchants who benefited from the success of the Devon wool trade in the 16th and 17th centuries. Learn about this local wealth and history by visiting Tiverton Museum.

Walking
Walk the banks of the River Exe and its tributary, the River Lowman. We'd recommend a section of the Exe Valley Way. These two rivers meet at 'Tiverton - 'two-ford-town' - [which] takes its name from the ancient crossing points over the River Exe and its tributary'.

Local attractions
Local attractions include Cothay Manor and Gardens and Wellington Monument, Hestercombe Gardens and the National Trust's Knightshayes Court. For National Trust properties, see also Killerton, Marker's Cottage and, about fifty minutes away, Castle Drogo and Gardens.

Beaches
The A361 takes you to the vast sand beaches of the North Devon AONB. Try also the beaches to the south east in the East Devon AONB. There's Minehead Beach and Porlock Weir Beach, too.

Day trips
For longer day trips, we'd suggest you explore Dartmoor National Park and Exmoor National Park.

The towns of The English Riviera are to the south, beyond Exeter. Try also the South Devon AONB, Plymouth, Lyme Regis and Dorset.
