Pier and promenade, beach and coastal walking
Popular seaside resort on the north bank of the River Teign and Estuary and Devon coast. Across the water is Shaldon. To the south are The English Riviera and the South Devon AONB. Dartmoor National Park is to the west.

With its long promenade and beach, pier and sea views, Teignmouth is great for a coastal holiday or weekend break. Head west from the seafront and you're walking through a warren of streets towards the River Teign and Estuary. The Romantic poet John Keats stayed here in 1818 and visitors are still drawn to the natural beauty of the estuary today. Walk north from the seafront and you're on the South West Coast Path which leads to Dawlish and Dawlish Warren.

We'd recommend taking a water taxi to Shaldon and walking the steep hill to the top of The Ness. The views back down towards Teignmouth are top. From there, descend the path to Shaldon Zoo and visit Ness Cove Beach. Note that the famous view of Teignmouth, and the red cliffs of the coastline in this area, is a little further south of Ness Cove Beach on the South West Coast Path.

The local area
We'd recommend visiting local beaches. Try Maidencombe Beach and Watcombe Beach to the south and Red Rock Beach and Dawlish Warren Beach to the north. At Dawlish Warren, we'd recommend walking along the massive beach to Warren Point. The crowds tend to thin out the further you are away from Dawlish Warren and the views of the River Exe and Estuary and Exmouth are excellent. Try the beaches around The English Riviera and in the South Devon AONB, too.

Bike riding is fun, and safe, at Haldon Forest Park and kids love Powderham Castle and Estate. Just up the road from Powderham are The Turf and Turf Lock. It's nice to take the water taxi from Turf Lock to Topsham.

South of Teignmouth, The English Riviera is packed with great places to visit and things to do. Try Living Coasts by Torquay Marina and take a tour of Kents Cavern, explore Babbacombe Model Village and spend a day at Paignton Zoo.

A little further afield
Dartmoor National Park is west of Teignmouth. Haytor Rocks, perhaps Dartmoor's most famous tor, is easily accessible. We'd recommend walking in Lustleigh Cleave. The views from Harton Chest across East Dartmoor and down to the coast around Teignmouth are stunning.

South and south west of Teignmouth is the South Devon AONB. Check out our 'Top 10 Recommendations' lists within our South Devon section for ideas about which beaches to visit and what things to do. Dartmouth and Salcombe are highlights.

We'd also suggest you spend some time exploring Exeter and Plymouth.
