Tors in Tavistock
Tavistock is often described as a gateway town to Dartmoor National Park. This means it's close to the high moors and its tors. Some of the most dramatic outcrops are near the town. We've been exploring and photographing these tors for years now so browse our 'Top 10 Recommended Tors near Tavistock' list for walking inspiration. By James Penman.

Brent Tor, Devon

Brent Tor is a famous Devon landmark. A rocky outcrop topped with a church, the tor is set back from the high moors which means it provides massive views of the entire west flank of Dartmoor.

Great Staple Tor, Devon

One of the most dramatic and beautiful tors in Dartmoor National Park, Great Staple Tor is easily accessible from the B3357 which is the road that climbs from Tavistock to the high moors.

Great Mis Tor

Great Mis Tor is a huge, rocky tor near Merrivale Stone Rows. There's a small car park off the road between these two points of interest. It's a relatively easy walk to its summit.

Sharpitor

Burrator Reservoir is a popular Dartmoor tourist attraction. It's surrounded by tors. Sharpitor is a jumble of granite north of the water. Sharpitor is next to Leather Tor.

Leather Tor

Leather Tor is a superb fin of rock and great for a scramble. Yes, it's small in comparison but it reminds us of Tryfan. If you enjoy a scramble, in South West England visit Kilmar Tor.

Sheeps Tor

Sheeps Tor rises east of Burrator Reservoir. There are big views of Dartmoor's south plateau from its summit. You'll also be looking down at one of the locations for Steven Spielberg's 'War Horse'.

Brat Tor, Devon

Another easily accessible tor but this time on the west side of Dartmoor National Park. The National Trust's Lydford Gorge and Waterfall and English Heritage's Lydford Castle are nearby.

Hare Tor, Devon

Walk to Hare Tor and then Ger Tor above the spectacular Tavy Cleave. The remote Fur Tor is visible on the high north plateau.

Great Links Tor, Devon

Big tor on some of the highest ground in the Park. Super views across the Tamar Valley AONB into Cornwall.

Yes Tor, Devon

Yes Tor is one of only two mountains in South England. Follow the A386 to the car park at Meldon Reservoir and Dam before heading up to the summit.
