Calstock, Tamar Valley AONB

The Tamar Valley is home to Cotehele, Buckland Abbey, Antony House, Calstock Viaduct, Morwellham Quay, Devon Great Consols and the River Tamar itself. Superb Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Dartmoor Ponies, Dartmoor National Park

Tavistock offers great access to some of Dartmoor's highest and wildest areas. Follow the B3357 in to the heart of the moors.

Lydford, Devon

Head north of Tavistock on the A386 and you'll come to Lydford. Both the National Trust and English Heritage have properties here. Good pub, too.

Calstock, Cornwall

If you take the A390 west of Tavistock, you'll cross the River Tamar into Cornwall. Calstock is a gorgeous village on the Cornwall bank of the river.

Princetown is in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Clearly, it's a great place from which to walk. Discover Dartmoor in the Princetown National Park Visitor Centre.

Plymouth, Devon

The A386 runs south of Tavistock to Plymouth. Sir Francis Drake, The Pilgrim Fathers and Charles Darwin all sailed from here. Historically fascinating. Also packed with visitor attractions.

Okehampton, Devon

Tavistock is a gateway town to the west of Dartmoor. Okehampton is a gateway town to the north west. There's an English Heritage castle and super museum.


Once the capital of Cornwall, Launceston is a beautiful, historic town topped with an English Heritage castle.

Bodmin Moor

Dartmoor is east of Tavistock. Bodmin Moor is a little further to the west. If time's short, head for Minions and all the attractions around Minions Heritage Centre.


Looe is a classic Cornwall harbour town on the East Cornwall coast. Very beautiful. Its narrow streets are lined with shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs which gives you an idea of the town's popularity.
