Coast and beaches
A short distance south of Dartmouth and the River Dart and Estuary within the South Devon AONB, Stoke Fleming is just to the north of the exceptionally popular and well photographed Blackpool Sands. It's a stunning location and a great base from which to explore the South Devon AONB, Dartmoor National Park, The English Riviera and the cities of Exeter and Plymouth.

On the South West Coast Path, we'd recommend walking south west down the hill to Blackpool Sands and then beyond to Strete Gate and Slapton Sands. To the east and north east, follow through National Trust land to Dartmouth Castle. From here, it's fun to take Dartmouth Castle Ferry to the Dartmouth Harbour area. Kingswear's across the water*. Up river, via Dartmouth Boat Trips, see Dittisham and Greenway Quay (and Agatha Christie's Greenway House), Stoke Gabriel and Totnes.

Local area
In addition to Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands, the South Devon AONB has loads of top beaches. For shingle, in addition to those just mentioned, try Bee Sands and Hall Sands. For sand, we'd suggest Mill Bay Beach on The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary and Bantham Beach and Dunes with its views of Burgh Island. Try also Thurlestone Sands/South Milton Sands (Beach) and Bigbury-on-Sea Beach. Some of The English Riviera beaches are superb.

Clearly, all these beaches are on the South West Coast Path. This Path offers some of South West England's best walks. Start Bay is impressive as is the stretch of coast from Thurlestone to Bigbury-on-Sea.

If you're looking for something other than beaches and coastline, try Overbeck's Garden and Museum by Salcombe. Also visit Totnes Castle, Berry Pomeroy Castle and The Golden Hinde (Devon). For kids, we'd suggest Woodlands Park and Paignton Zoo, Kents Cavern and Living Coasts. Over in Plymouth, we'd recommend the Plymouth National Marine Aquarium. Beyond Kingswear are the National Trust's Coleton Fishacre and Berry Head Forts.

Day trips
Once you've explored the local area, we'd suggest some longer day trips within Dartmoor National Park, the Tamar Valley AONB, the East Devon AONB and the cities of Exeter and Plymouth.

On Dartmoor, try the area around Canterbury Castle. The Dart Gorge is particularly gorgeous. We'd recommend Lustleigh Cleave, too. For tors, the obvious ones to summit are Haytor Rocks and Hound Tor (East Dartmoor).

West of Dartmoor, on the Devon/Cornwall border is the much under visited . It's naturally very beautiful and has some cracking attractions including Morwellham Quay UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Trust properties such as Cotehele House and Gardens.

The East Devon AONB, beyond Exeter and The English Riviera, is home to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and many stunning beaches.

Exeter and Plymouth are great.

* Several vehicle ferries run across the River Dart here connecting Dartmouth to Kingswear, the South Devon AONB to The English Riviera.
