Beautiful estuary and seaside location
Beautiful village strung out along the south bank of the
Teign Estuary which flows into Babbacombe Bay off the
Devon coast. Given its location, Shaldon's geared towards leisure and tourism. There are plenty of pubs and places to eat and drink behind
Shaldon Beach with top views across the water to
Teignmouth.
For its views, we'd recommend walking to the top of The Ness which is the high cliff to the east of the village. Follow the path south and you'll come to
Shaldon Zoo. It's a superb little zoo and well worth a visit. From there, walk through the tunnel to explore
Ness Cove Beach which stretches out beneath high red cliffs.
In
Teignmouth,
Teignmouth Pier is fun. The town's
beach is always popular. We'd also recommend strolling the promenade with its super views of coast and sea. Equally as impressive are the views east of the boats on the
Teign Estuary. Inland, to the north west, visit
Haldon Forest Park.
Long distance walking
If you're into walking, Shaldon's a great base from which to start and return. The
Templer Way heads to
Dartmoor National Park. North of Shaldon, via a water taxi, the
South West Coast Path heads towards
Dawlish Warren Beach and the
Exe Estuary. South of Shaldon, the Path climbs and falls as it winds its way down the coast towards
Babbacombe and
The English Riviera. There are some superb little beaches on this part of the coast. Try
Watcombe Beach and
Maidencombe Beach.
West of Shaldon, walk to
The Coombe Cellars and its superbly positioned pub.
