Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary
One of
Devon's, and
South West England's, most beautiful and popular destinations on a bank of
The Salcombe Kingsbridge Estuary. With top beaches and sailing, plenty of restaurants and pubs, it's an exceptional place.
Salcombe's within the
South Devon AONB.
Kingsbridge is to the north.
Prawle Point and
Start Point are to the east and
Bolberry Down and
Hope Cove to the west.
Amazing beaches
The area's perfect for a beach holiday.
Mill Bay Beach, with National Trust land and a small car park behind, is wonderful. There are good views across the water to Salcombe and
Salcombe Castle. We'd also recommend catching the
South Sands Sea Tractor/Taxi to
South Sands. Spend some time on the beach and then walk up to
Overbeck's Garden and Museum.
Great walking
Given its location on the
South Devon coast, this is a great area in which to walk the
South West Coast Path. To the west, head for
Soar Mill Cove and
Bolberry Down. To the east, follow the coast past numerous sandy coves towards
Start Point. Beyond Start Point, the coast heads north past
Hall Sands and
Bee Sands towards
Slapton Sands,
Blackpool Sands and then
Dartmouth.
The local area
If you're looking for day trips from Salcombe, we'd recommend heading west to
Bantham Beach and Dunes and
Bigbury-on-Sea Beach. Climb to the summit of
Burgh Island for memorable views. The stretch of coastline from Bantham Beach to
Thurlestone Leas Foot Sand (Beach) is, in our opinion, one of the best for views on the entire
South West Coast Path.
Dartmouth is great for day trips as is
Totnes. Click through to our summary guides for each destination to read more recommendations for things to do and see.
Further afield
The English Riviera is to the north east.
Dartmoor National Park is a reasonable drive to the north west.
Plymouth is to the west.
If time permits, we'd recommend exploring the
Tamar Valley AONB. Straddling the
Devon and
Cornwall border, we think it's one of the most under visited destinations in
South West England.
